Question 1

What is Madhubani painting?

Accepted Answer

Madhubani painting is a traditional Indian folk art style that originated in the Mithila region of Bihar. It is characterized by intricate geometric patterns, bold outlines and natural dyes, and is traditionally painted by women on walls, floors and fabric to depict nature, mythology and daily life.

Question 2

Is Madhubani painting the same as Mithila painting?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Madhubani painting and Mithila painting refer to the same art form. 'Mithila' is the name of the historical region in Bihar (and parts of Nepal) where the art originated, while 'Madhubani' is the specific district most associated with its revival, so both names are used interchangeably.

Question 3

What materials are used to make a Madhubani painting?

Accepted Answer

Traditional Madhubani paintings use natural and organic materials - twigs, matchsticks, nib pens and brushes for outlines, combined with dyes made from plant extracts, charcoal, cow dung, turmeric and flowers for colour.

Question 4

Are Srijani's Madhubani products handmade by women artisans?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every Madhubani painting, saree and product sold by Srijani is hand-painted by women artisans from villages in Bihar, supporting their livelihoods and helping preserve this centuries-old heritage art.

Question 5

How do I care for a hand-painted Madhubani saree?

Accepted Answer

Hand-painted Madhubani sarees should be dry-cleaned or gently hand-washed in cold water, dried in shade away from direct sunlight, and ironed on a low, reverse setting to preserve the hand-painted colours and fabric.

Question 6

Accepted Answer

Srijani ships its handcrafted Madhubani paintings, sarees and other products across India, with details on delivery timelines and international shipping available on the shipping and returns policy page.
